Shoppers Drugmart and Rising Food Prices

You may not think of going grocery shopping at a Drugstore. However, Shoppers has lost litre sales quite frequently. That's when you should head on in and stock up on the deals for your pantry or freezer. Until close tomorrow, Shoppers has Delicsso pizzas on for $3.99. This is a great thing to have in your freezer for a night that you need a super fast meal, need something for school lunches, or you are invited to a pot luck.

Shoppers is also having their 2 kg Sugar on until June 10 (so the sign said in the Charlottetown store) for $1.99. That's much cheaper than the grocery store.

But, here's the thing: This Saturday their sugar is going to be on for $1.79/2kg! There's a limit of 4 per visit. Take your spouse, your children and yourself in and stock up. This is one item that we have been ensured is going up over the next several months.

Shoppers is also having their butter on sale this Saturday only, for $2.99/lb (limit of 4)! After that the price is $3.49 (which is their sale price this week). Yes, I am making room in my freezer.

The last thing that I see that's a great stock up item is Honey Bunches of Oats Cereal. It's on for $2.49, plus take any coupons with you. There is no limit stated in the flyer for this item and it's on all week!

This is just one way of helping yourself out with rising food costs. You see what you regularly use and when it's on sale, you stock up. Find a shelf, put it in the basement, closet, or a section of your cupboards and make room for items when they are on sale. Your budget will thank you.

What are you doing to beat the rising cost of food?

Review: SOS Pads vs Steel Wool (Curly q's)

How many of us get annoyed with stubborn stains on our pots and pans and purchase these cleaning pads to get everything nice and shiny again? They do work quite nicely. Everything gets nice and clean and those stains are gone until the next time you cook that meal. The SOS pad shrivels up and by the end of it you through it in the garbage. These don't last very long, can cost a bit and aren't recyclable.

In walks the Curly Q, as we call it here. A pack of three can be purchased at the dollar store for, you guessed it, one dollar. But do they work? Will they clean your pots and pans as good as the SOS pads with their chemicals and quick cleaning claim?

The Curly Q works just as good, or even better then the SOS pads! They don't leave that film on your dishes that sometimes comes with the SOS pads. They don't leave a weird feeling on your hands when your done with them. They last more than a few times (like months if cleaned properly!) and are WAY cheaper! Also, they can be recycled after wards!

If you buy the bigger ones, just cut them into more manageable sizes and your money goes even further!

My money is on the Curly Q's . It's a small change. It won't make you a millionaire, but it will help a little bit and little bits can go a long way!

Tell me what are your thoughts on it?

Globe and Mail Article About Rising Food Prices

There was an interesting article featured in the Globe and Mail newspaper yesterday about rising food prices and how they are affecting all families. Whether you are a low, middle, or higher income household, this is something that will effect all of us. And... there were a couple of quotes from little ol' me in it!

Over the next few posts I will be sharing with you some of my ideas on strategic shopping and how to save more on your food bill. Please feel free to check out the categories to the right and see where else you can change your grocery focus. Any extra ideas you would like to share with everyone feel free to write in and let everyone know!

Family Movie Day

In our home with four young children, it's very expensive to go to the movie theatre -even on cheap night it still comes to $30 without snacks! It's cheaper for us to buy the movie and watch it at home. Plus with having little ones, we would end up having to rent it at some point again watch the movie so they could see what they missed. At the movie theatre, you can't pause the movie for bathroom breaks, or refill breaks or any other reason, but at home we can.

So as a compromise with our children, we rent or buy (if we think it's going to be a movie we watch several times) a new release that they want to see. This time we watched:

All of the family enjoyed watching it, but agreed that it was a one time movie. Glad we rented it.

To make the day more enjoyable, we each get to pick out a treat that we want to eat during the movie and get enough to share with the family. That's six different treats! Some chose chips, some chose popcorn, others various forms of candy.

For picking out candy where else is a better spot to go then to the bulk barn! There they have everything there that one can imagine!

Try it. Eating a bunch of junk with your family and watching a family movie is time and money well spent! In total, movie rental and treats, it came to well under the $30 it would have cost for our family to have watched the same movie in the theatres on a cheap night. We were able to do it on our schedule and have all sorts of treats instead of the over priced ones at the theatre.

What frugal things do you do with your family that we can try?

March Break ideas

March Break may have happened where you are, or is about to happen (where we are). If you're wondering about some ideas to do on March Break, I have two links for you to try.

One is from our archives from last year with a list of ideas to occupy one's family while on a staycation. Check it out and let me know what else you would like to add to the list.

The other link is to a friend's blog, her link is always on the right side of blog under Other Frugal Blogs. She is Sondra from Island Family Living. On her blog, she has a post with a list of ideas to do here on the Island for March Break. You should check her out.

Stock up on butter and cheese

I am a firm believer in stocking up on food when it's sale, especially with the threat of food prices climbing this year.  This week, there are a few things that I think are worth putting your money into to stock up on. One is butter. It can be so expensive, but this week, Atlantic butter is on sale 2/$7 at coop and Everyday Butter at Shoppers is $3.49lb . My freezer will be getting quite a few added in as we bake a lot with butter. I highly recommend if you use butter, you stock up too.

Cracker Barrel cheese is on sale at Superstore this week 500g/$4.99. Another great thing to put in your freezer, just remember to defrost it in the refrigerator and not on your counter, otherwise it will become extremely soft.

Did you see something on sale in the flyers that would be a great thing to stock up on? Share it with the rest of us and submit it for posting. What sort of things do you stock up on?

Book Sale!

I love to read! Books are a wonderful way to escape from life, however, they can be rather expensive. Borowing from the library is one way to get to read your books for free. Another way is to trade books with friends or to buy books used.

One other way that our family loves, and is happening this weekend at the Confederation Library here in Charlottetown, is a library book sale.  This a great way to get books for a great price and if they are in good enough condition can be used for gifts for parties or Christmas. I wish they had information on their site about it. The sale takes place tomorrow from 10-5 and it's cash only. Tell me of any good deals you get at the sale.

Food prices going up

It's on everyone's mind and in the news a lot. This is just a little reminder that Coop has their flour on sale for $6.99/10kg until close tonight. Something that would be great to stock up on now while it's cheap. What are you purchasing now to stay ahead of the price increases that are coming?

Coupon for seeds

Hello all, gardening is one of the most frugal ways to save money on your grocery bill, and believe it or not, spring is coming and it's time to start those transplants. Time to buy your seeds, dirt and containers. Don't you feel warmer just thinking of the garden? Home depot has a deal on this week for buying seeds. Print this coupon off and when you buy two packages of seeds, you get the third free!

It says one per customer, but it doesn't say anything about being a customer at different times or printing off more than one and getting your family members to help you out! Happy gardening!
