Free Family Christmas Nativity Pageant
Some times the true meaning of Christmas gets lost in the lists of things and traditions. However, there are two live free nativity pageants that I know of here in the island that you may be interested in.
The first one happened last bight and will again tonight. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints does a live nativity with real actors and animals. Tonight's showings are at 7, 7:40, and 8pm. Each show lasts 15 mins with free cookies and hot chocolate afterwards. This takes place at 10 Northridge Parkway in Charlottetown PE. my family and I will be attending this evening, it would be lovely to see you there. Last year my husband was one of the wiseman and my son was a shepherd. They loved being part of it.
The second event takes place this Saturday evening, December 17, 6-9pm at the York United church in York PE. It's a drive through Bethlehem. You stay in your car and drive through te village of Bethlehem meeting others who are looking for the Christ child. It's a wonderful evening. Although the line up can be rather long at times, I suggest parking your car on the road or at the post office down the road from the church and walking through the nativity. It brings a whole new feeling to it. At the end you are asked to make a donation if you like. They donate all proceeds to a local charity. Last year I played a role in it. This year, bezoar of our newborn, I won't be, but I'll have several family members that have taken my place.
I hope you are able to make it to one of these events as they truly help bring in the real Christmas spirit.

Harry Potter on the Cheap!
Today my son and I are seeing it for free. Yep, free.
It started by waiting just a couple of days to see the movie and not have the completely crazy crowds. We decided to go on the cheap Tuesday day. Instead of it costing us at the most $19 for the two of us to go on Saturday night, it will only cost us $11.98 today on a cheap show.
Here's the bonus: I was cleaning out my nightstand and found an unused giftcard to the theatre!
We are seeing it for nothing!
If you really want to see a movie in the theatre, it pays to wait a couple of days and catch it on the cheap day. Justifies the cost a little bit. Especially when you think that the $19 we could have spent could pay for the DVD when it comes out on those first few days when they are on sale.
Hooray!

Family Movie Day
In our home with four young children, it's very expensive to go to the movie theatre -even on cheap night it still comes to $30 without snacks! It's cheaper for us to buy the movie and watch it at home. Plus with having little ones, we would end up having to rent it at some point again watch the movie so they could see what they missed. At the movie theatre, you can't pause the movie for bathroom breaks, or refill breaks or any other reason, but at home we can.
So as a compromise with our children, we rent or buy (if we think it's going to be a movie we watch several times) a new release that they want to see. This time we watched:
All of the family enjoyed watching it, but agreed that it was a one time movie. Glad we rented it.
To make the day more enjoyable, we each get to pick out a treat that we want to eat during the movie and get enough to share with the family. That's six different treats! Some chose chips, some chose popcorn, others various forms of candy.
For picking out candy where else is a better spot to go then to the bulk barn! There they have everything there that one can imagine!
Try it. Eating a bunch of junk with your family and watching a family movie is time and money well spent! In total, movie rental and treats, it came to well under the $30 it would have cost for our family to have watched the same movie in the theatres on a cheap night. We were able to do it on our schedule and have all sorts of treats instead of the over priced ones at the theatre.

A dinner for you, me and 100 other people!
Ever need to throw a party and feed 100 people, and want to do it for as little money as possible?
There are many routes that one can go down to make the food cheaply. My favourite way is a potluck. Whether it's a wedding, anniversary, family reunion, church picnic, or the graduating class, a potluck is a great way to go to save money.
There are so many fun ways to do a potluck. Have a theme for the night and food for your theme. Ask everyone to bring a food that starts with the first letter of their name. Divide guests in fifths and assign each fifth to bring an appetizer, soup or salad, entree, side dish or dessert. Or you could go totally uncommitted and just let everyone bring what they want.
Don't want to do a potluck? Well, there are other options out there, but from here on in your costs increase rather dramatically.
The garden style party is always an easy route that allows for much preparation a head of time. Meats can be mixed, crusts trimmed from breads, and salads, veggie, fruit, meat and cheese trays can mostly prepared before the event. The morning of is just compiling all of the sandwiches and cutting them up. This style encourages people to get up and move around to socialize.
Maybe the cheapest cooked meal to make a lot of people would be spaghetti. Serve it with homemade garlic bread, baguettes, or flat bread and a caesar salad and everyone is happy. It's a meal that you can make up a head of time, aside from combining the salad, and even freeze portions of it. With all of the vegetables coming from gardens and farmers markets, making your own spaghetti sauce is not only cheaper, but will bring a unique taste to your table.
Other ways of having a cooked meal cheaply done, would be to have soup, stew or chilli cooked ahead of time and warmed up the day of. That served with some salads, rolls and an apple crisp would be great if your event were in the fall. All of the vegetables and fruits needed would be in abundance in your neighbourhood gardens or local farmers market.
If you have a little more money to spend, you can always do a fully cooked meal head to toe, but this will take LOTS of time, and more money than the rest. You would have to borrow a friend or two's oven and cook whole chickens, meatloaf, or other meat dish and try to keep it warm. During this time of the year, meat is on sale, and if you can, find a local meat producer, they may be more willing to cut you even more of a deal.
If you have all of your vegetables peeled and sliced before the event, and stored in water, then you only have to turn them on and cook them the morning of. Again, this take the most time, effort and money and I don't think that you would enjoy the event at all yourself.
Then the next thing you need to think of are desserts. These are a little easier to make and freeze in advance of the event. Several trays with selections of squares, cookies, and little cakes make great desserts that guests can pick several choices from to tickle their taste buds.
If you want to go with something a little more formal, you could prepare cheesecake, apple crisp, or pies ahead of time and freeze them already sliced. There's always a light fruit cocktail with dessert topping that is a nice ending to a meal as well.

Then tonight, I happened to look and see that you are still visiting. I am sorry for the lack of information on my part. In the past 14 days, I have been to the Indian River Festival, had tickets to the Cavendish Beach Country Concert for the opening night, went to see the filming of Live with Regis and Kelly, and received tickets to go to see Allan Jackson in concert!
How can one afford all of this while trying to remain frugal?
You win tickets on radio stations, go with your MIL who has free tickets from a neighbour, get tickets for free from a friend who received free tickets be ordering them and then couldn't go, and get free tickets to a concert just for attending another event!
That's right, it was all done for free!
What a cultural month and we are only half way through!
I will say that one of the benefits of living on a small Island is the lack of population to enter the contests to win free things. Seriously, my parents think that I am really lucky, but the odds are really good that you will win something when only 140 000 people live in your province. Of that amount there are at least 4 radio stations with morning shows on them and not everyone can listen to every one of them. There are lots of contests out there to try out for. You'll be no further behind for entering.
So go ahead, enter, see what you can see. You don't even have to listen to the radio station all the time, some of them have contests on their websites or facebook pages.

Frugal March Break Ideas
A lot of us have children that will be having March Break at some point this month, ours is next week. Children are generally excited to just have the time off from school, but if you are looking for something to do that won't cost you anything (well, maybe a $1-2 a person) here are some ideas. PLEASE send in your ideas as well so that we all can benefit.
Have a day learning about your garden in the backyard and get your children to help plant the transplant seeds in containers so that they are ready in time for planting.
Go winter camping in a local field or in your backyard. Or just have a winter campfire.
Go to Crayola.com and find craft ideas.
Have a talent show with their friends and siblings.
Have a spring cleaning morning and then reward your helpers with a movie afternoon, either an old favourite or a freebie from a local gas station. There is one near where I live that kids movies are free.
You can also get free movies, board games and of course books at your local library. Check out events at your local library as they often have free events planned for the break.
Also, check out your local mall for events that may be happening. Here they are having the Discovery Centre at the mall for three days for children to come and learn about planets and stars. All free of course.
Our March Break covers St Patrick's day so have a party and don't forget to wear your green (or orange depending on your heritage and preference).
Go to the local pool for a twonie swim at your local pool.
Attend a matinee at the movie theatre for a $2 show.
Have a day of cooking and baking with your children. Let them pick what to make.

I don't know if any of you are planning on attending the Jack Frost Festival this weekend in Charlottetown, but there is a deal to be had this Monday. On Monday, Islander Day, you can go to the Festival for just $5 a person. That is much more affordable than the $20 a person they were charging for today. We had free tickets for part of the day today, and I must say that I wasn't particularly impressed with the lack of snow activities that they had for the amount they were charging. So if you are planning on going, wait until Monday and get your money's worth then.
Also, another deal for Islander Day is to be had at Brookvale Ski Hill. I can't remember the total amounts or anything, but check out their site to see. I know there was something about $6 a person.

Entertainment Environmental Frugalness
I am assuming that since you are reading here that you are trying to find ways to save money or redirect money for the things, events, life that you want. One of my biggest compliants is my power bill. December is ALWAYS my highest month. I don't even have a lot of Christmas lights. Some candles in the window and lights on the tree. However, with the dehumidifier running in the basement, power tools going for the reno and it staying dark way longer, our power bill goes up. Our kwh rate here on the Island is currently $0.14/kwh. I know that if it's not the highest in the country it's close to it. Whomever is reading this do me a favour and comment and tell me what your rate is for your electric/hydro rate is wherever you live, it only takes a moment.
In our home we like to every once in a very blue moon go out to eat as a family. I have a hard time justifying someone else cooking for me and entertaining our children at the restaurant when I can do the cooking at home and the children can play before and after dinner. Since we are a family of 6, going out to eat can cost a pretty penny. Doing anything like movies, amusement parks, festivals, etc can cost a fair amount, but I don't want my children to never experience fun away from home. So we have a deal and I'd like to propose (since it is the month of love) it to you, my readers.
Take a look at your budget for your power/hydro bill. It's the most you want to spend right? Pick an event, place or whatever you want to do as a family. Now, every month that you spend less on your power bill then what you have budgeted, sock it away until you reach the amount you need for your family celebration! If you do this as a family, you will be surprised how quickly you can achieve your goal! Everyone starts turning off lights and doing things that don't require as much electricity and you are helping the environment! Win win situation!
In our home, for the December bill (our power bill is monthly here) was just over $200. We have an electric hotwater heater and renos and what not. Usually, I have it around $150-$160 in the winter. So now every month that it is less than $200 that money goes towards a trip to Shining Waters, or another event this summer for our family or if we decide to go out to eat one night.

Free Entertainment for ALL!
If it hasn't already passed through your community, I suggest that you take your family to the Olympic Torch Relay. Check out all the communities that will be having events in our country.It's passing through our city tomorrow. Along with just being able to watch the flame go by, our city is having a free family friendly concert to celebrate it early in the evening. It all starts around 5:20pm here. Hope you get to enjoy it wherever you are!
