Grocery Shopping Tips

Everyone needs food, that's inevitable. However, to make your grocery shopping experience better and more profitable I want to share an article that I read recently with you. It was a tweet I read about 50 grocery tips. I was so excited to find out some new ideas. As I read down the list, there are many that I have shared here and many that I do, but it's always good to get more ideas. So here is a list of 50 things you can do to make your grocery shopping more frugal. Check out the link.

It Pays to Shop Around and to Check Flyers

We use extra virgin olive oil here. To buy it at the local store it is tres expensive, so whenever my father in law goes to Costco I get him to pick up a container of Kirtland's for me. We get the 5 litre container and it's usually about $28.

However, this week it was on sale in TWO flyers! Superstore and No Frills. Same brand. Same company owns both stores. WAY different prices!

Superstore had their 1 litre Gallo extra virgin olive oil on for $5.99. That's $29.95 for the same amount that I pay $28 for. No savings.

Then I saw the No Frills flyer and I had to do a double take. There, on the front page, was the EXACT SAME OIL on sale!! Gallo extra virgin olive oil on for $3.33/litre! That's $16.65 for the same amount that I pay $28 for at Costco! YES! It's a great deal! Today, I bought 12 for my storage.

So, if you use olive oil, run to No Frills and check it out! From what I have been able to understand, No Frills DOES NOT give out rain cheques. Please let me know if I am wrong, but last night I wasn't able to get one for chicken.

Know of any other great deals out there this week? Send it on in and we'll post them all!

Compare and Contrast

We are big orange juice drinkers in our home. We buy frozen from concentrate as it is cheaper than purchasing it already made. Our favourite is Minute Maid Pulp Free (closest picture I could find!)

Unfortunately, it has become expensive ($1.99 a can) and not on sale as much as we like. Although, I do stock up whenever it does go on sale.

So, we have been using an alternative when it's not on sale. We use President's Choice frozen orange juice.

However, it has gone up substantially in price also (regular price is now $1.79). Although it tastes great, I've started looking elsewhere to see what's out there.  I stayed at Superstore and tried their No Name brand (couldn't find a pic of of their logo). It was NOT a go in this house! Children absolutely detested it!

Next, we went to Sobeys.

They had some great sales going on and while I was there and I picked up some of their store brand. It was $1.49 a container. It was a better hit than the No Name brand, but not a huge hit. It's one we can go to though, when we can't get Minute Maid.

So then the other day I was at coop getting some sales and thought I would try theirs.

The cost was $1.39 (I think) per container. Brought it home and tried it on the children.

I should say at this point, that they were not aware of each brand that I purchased. They would make comments on each juice as we had it.

Coop brand was a hit!

Their favourite is still Minute Maid, but they said to them this was the closest in taste, and lucky for me, friendliest on my wallet.

Now your taste buds may say something else, but that's what we can go with here. I'll still get Minute Maid when it's on sale, but it's nice to have something cheaper to turn to.

So what do you use in your home for juice? What do you like the most?

Free Food!

Did the title grab you? It's almost completely free. I have heard of the show extreme couponing, but I don't have cable and haven't seen the show completely yet. I think I would get depressed watching it, because here in Canada, it just can't be done that well. Oh how I wish! Hear that Canadian businesses? We consumers would like more coupons!

Anyway, there is a way that we can get free food here, besides collecting coupons (which is always beneficial!) Are you intrigued?

I find that sometimes I take for granted the frugal things I do, everyone does, and did so with today's topic also. That was until someone pointed out to me that they weren't aware they could do it and that I should share it with you.

So, with that long introduction, I give you rewards points. You know what I mean; pc points, airmiles, aeroplan, etc.

I am a pc points user, among other reward cards, but this post is about my excitement with my pc points yesterday. I collect points with my bags, purchases and some banking needs. Does it add up? Yes.

Yesterday, I went to get a few groceries and ended up getting more then I went in for. I know, it goes against everything I preach about, but there were some good sales in the store that I didn't want to miss and I knew that I wasn't going to get back in for them later this week.

Another confession- I hadn't had a chance to check the flyers before going in to the store. So I had no idea what I was walking into. You see, I had an appointment in town, borrowed someone else's car and thought I would stop in to get some milk, cheese and some oranges. I didn't even have any of my bags with me to get more points and had to bring plastic bags (gasp) home with me.

My total bill came to $135. It was more than I had budgeted for (as that is a lot for milk, cheese and oranges) and I was truly kicking myself in the pants about it. Then I remembered that I had been accumulating points for a couple of months. I asked the cashier to check and see how many I could redeem and apply them to my bill. I had $100 free in groceries! How wonderful is that? I love it.

I am a big promoter of having these little reward cards with you. Yes, they take up room. Yes, it's annoying to remember them. However, it's great to be able to use these cards in everyday conveniences and get things back.

Now, I won't say what's the best one for me, as something else may work for you, but, if you can use them to get a discount on your insurance, heating bills, groceries, entertainment, why not?

I am not talking about credits cards. Although there are people out there that can do it responsibly, there are others that have a difficult time managing these cards, and so I promote the ones that aren't attached to anything or those that piggyback your regular chequing account. That way you aren't going in to debt to use them.

Do you use rewards cards? What do you them for? Do you have a certain one that you recommend over others?

If you're going to be regularly shopping at a store that offers this, why not let your shopping work for you so that you can use less of your money?

Shoppers Drugmart and Rising Food Prices

You may not think of going grocery shopping at a Drugstore. However, Shoppers has lost litre sales quite frequently. That's when you should head on in and stock up on the deals for your pantry or freezer. Until close tomorrow, Shoppers has Delicsso pizzas on for $3.99. This is a great thing to have in your freezer for a night that you need a super fast meal, need something for school lunches, or you are invited to a pot luck.

Shoppers is also having their 2 kg Sugar on until June 10 (so the sign said in the Charlottetown store) for $1.99. That's much cheaper than the grocery store.

But, here's the thing: This Saturday their sugar is going to be on for $1.79/2kg! There's a limit of 4 per visit. Take your spouse, your children and yourself in and stock up. This is one item that we have been ensured is going up over the next several months.

Shoppers is also having their butter on sale this Saturday only, for $2.99/lb (limit of 4)! After that the price is $3.49 (which is their sale price this week). Yes, I am making room in my freezer.

The last thing that I see that's a great stock up item is Honey Bunches of Oats Cereal. It's on for $2.49, plus take any coupons with you. There is no limit stated in the flyer for this item and it's on all week!

This is just one way of helping yourself out with rising food costs. You see what you regularly use and when it's on sale, you stock up. Find a shelf, put it in the basement, closet, or a section of your cupboards and make room for items when they are on sale. Your budget will thank you.

What are you doing to beat the rising cost of food?

Enjoy your day!

Stock up on butter and cheese

I am a firm believer in stocking up on food when it's sale, especially with the threat of food prices climbing this year.  This week, there are a few things that I think are worth putting your money into to stock up on. One is butter. It can be so expensive, but this week, Atlantic butter is on sale 2/$7 at coop and Everyday Butter at Shoppers is $3.49lb . My freezer will be getting quite a few added in as we bake a lot with butter. I highly recommend if you use butter, you stock up too.

Cracker Barrel cheese is on sale at Superstore this week 500g/$4.99. Another great thing to put in your freezer, just remember to defrost it in the refrigerator and not on your counter, otherwise it will become extremely soft.

Did you see something on sale in the flyers that would be a great thing to stock up on? Share it with the rest of us and submit it for posting. What sort of things do you stock up on?

Enjoy your day!

Helpful Reader Tips

Good morning all,

Wonderful reader Nicole sent me a fantistic tip filled email awhile back and I am finally getting around to sharing it with all of you. Check out her tips and check out her blog! Leave a comment for her telling her that you came from here.

And, hey, if any of you other readers out there have some tips you would like to share, email me at smile_zil at yahoo dot ca and I'll get them up here with a link to your blog as well!

Enjoy your day!

Hi ! It's Nicole from the blog Life's Simple Pleasure's!

I would love to share some tips with you as I am currently a cashier at Superstore - lots  of inside goodies! And now that I've found you, I can send them along as I think of them!

Here's a few:

1) Some Superstore's have implemented a "Coupon Zone" in which they offer coupons for products in the store, mostly on no name products, but some other ones (last week they had $5 off of Aveno!). They have one at our store, and I've seen it in Calgary so it is something that shoppers can look out for- it's located in the foyer by where you get your cart!

2) When buying shampoo/conditioner, it pays off to not just take the front bottle because often companies will send a few boxes with "Bonuses" in them- I've seen this with Dove actually where it is the exact same price for more product- so have a look around- hard find, but a good one nonetheless!

3) If a product comes up the wrong price and you catch the mistake you are supposed to receive the product for free (if it's under $10) and if it's over $10, you receive $10 off of your purchase. I would double check this with each store but that is the policy!

4) Superstore is also offering a 1 cent rebate on reusable bags now- it's a small amount but if you frequently use reuseable bags- its worth it to get your penny back!

5) If you need moving boxes the produce department gives away banana boxes for free (you just have to catch them at the right time before they get recycled!)

6) Some Superstores offer a cooking class inwhich you receive at 3 to 4 course meal for only $18. As well, in our store and I'm sure in others, they offer a What's for Dinner Lunch which costs $10, and when you attend you get a $10 gift card. (again you would have to check locally, but it is something that we do!)

Those are just some ideas off of the top of my head! I will gladly share any ideas that come up that I think you might find useful!

Nicole

I just remembered two more things!:

- On each barcode/price tag in front of products there are two important (yet tiny font) items

1. It will tell you the price per 100 g on some items, so for people who are unsure about which brand is cheaper or hate doing math, you can actually compare it there.

2. it will say how long the product is on sale for (supesrtore implemented a new "Just Lower Prices" which means there are flyer prodcuts but also price roll backs. this way, you can see how long particular item is on sale for. It is great for budgeting or for people who walk, helps you decide if you can wait until the next trip to buy things and carry them home!

3. also important, some places offer a 2 for $5 sale(for example) and you have to purchase both items to get the price. But at Superstore and other stores, you can actually get the 1 at 2 for $5 price- you don't have to purchase both! I hope that makes sense I think I was confusing! But basically it is that people don't have to buy 2, they can buy one and still get the sale :)

that's all for now :)

Got a Sweet Tooth?

This post initially was to let you all know about the sale for this week at Shoppers Drugmart. You see, I have a beef with their flyers. They only let people in the city/town know about the sales in their food flyers. They are the only people that get those special flyers. Even if you go online, unless you put in a urban postal code, you are not able to access their flyer. I think this stinks.

Thankfully, I have a friend that lives "in town" who lets me know when things like eggs, butter and sugar are on sale there. I use her postal code online to be able to view each week as well.  She was the one who let me know that starting January 30th butter ($3.49) and sugar ($1.49/ 2kg) are on sale at Shoppers. I love it when they go on sale so that I can stock up.

However, last evening, I found out from two friends about sugar going on up in price do to the rain happening in Brazil and India where a lot of our sugar comes from. I looked on the news and found this from ctv. They are talking about sugar going up to three times the amount in the next bit. Now we know that this isn't just sugar, but all grocery/baking items that contain sugar as well that will go up.

So the moral is, get your sugar this week on sale at Shoppers and if they are out please don't forget RAINCHEQUES!!!!!!!!  Then you have an extra month to stock up on this item.

There's your tip for the day.

Enjoy your day!

Frugal Reader Report

Hello All,

A reader friend send this email to me with their experience of savings at Sobeys. I found it rather intriguing, so I asked permission to be able to share it with all of you:

Hey Liz,

I don't know if you have noticed that Sobey's sometimes gives away crazy amounts of airmiles when you purchase $x.xx amount of certain products.

L and I took advantage of such a deal this week. In partnership with Quaker, Frito-Lay, Pepsi, Tropicana, and Gatorade, Sobey's was giving away 350 air miles with the purchase of $100 of their products.

Now, we are not one's to drink pop often, or gatorade, we rarely get chips, and juice is kinda out of our budget right now. However, while we were in the cereal aisle I did some quick calculations in my head and realized that 350 airmiles was about $50 in Sobey's giftcards - when I got home I found out that I was correct.

We also noticed that a number of the items were on sale, or available in family size boxes. So, what we found on sale was granola bars, life cereal, crispy minis, rice cakes, and oatmeal. We also found oatmeal to go bars in bulk, as well as a few more granola bars in the bulk family size as well. We then realized that it was Tuesday and because of the 10% off discount I get for being a student on that day, we had to add a couple extras to get us over the $100 after the discount. We found some pretzels, baked cheetos, and some diet ginger ale from frito-lay and pepsi.

I don't know the exact figures, but I would estimate that with all the sales and discounts, we bought over $150 - probably much more than $150 - of food for $100, and we will have enough airmiles to cash in for $50 worth of giftcard money from sobey's, plus we also received the coupon for a discount on our next fill-up on gas from Irving.

So, over $150 worth of food for $50, more variety, and a huge increase to our food storage, plus the discount on gas, it is one of those things I hadn't really thought about much, but it is a great deal for us, and we really don't have to worry about groceries other than some perishables for the next 5 months.

Keep your comments and stories coming. I love it when we learn from each other.

Chicken? Good deal or not?

Just around Christmas, I bought a nice whole local chicken. It was on sale at Superstore for $6.39/kg or $2.90/lb for you non metric people, which, I feel was a good price. I lucked out, however, because it was marked down 30% off that because it had to be used or frozen in the next 24 hours. Love a deal.

I took said chicken home, and placed it in the freezer until yesterday. Last night we had that wonderful chicken for supper with some wonderful guests and we have lots of leftovers for meals this week.

As the chicken was defrosting, I noticed something very interesting with the label. The moisture from the chicken was causing the label to become transparent and to lift off. There, underneath the label, was another label! I quickly grabbed my camera to document what was happening. Here is said chicken prior to second label.

After peeling off the label, here is what the other label showed.

It's the place where the chicken comes from and the price that Superstore bought it for. Look at the difference and the mark up from the price they paid, to the price that I paid! Amazing isn't it? Three times the price. They didn't have to do much with it either as it came bagged and everything. All they had to do was place their label on over it. My good deal didn't seem like much of a good deal anymore.

I felt bad for the local farmer. Here they were only paid $1 per pound and I was charged $2.90 per pound. So today, I called the farmer to see if they sold to the general public and what the cost would be. These are free range and local birds too. The farmer told me that they do sell their birds locally at the farmers market and they are $2.75 a pound. More than what Superstore pays them but less than what I paid at Superstore on sale.

So the moral of the story is, do you know where your meat comes from? Can you get a better deal by buying local?  Can you get an even better deal by contacting the farmer locally? Can you get a better deal by going together with friends to buy in bulkIt's worth it to check it out and see where you can get the best deal.

Enjoy your day!

Christmas Frugal Baking

It is the season that we certainly bake more. I think more goes on for eating sweets in December than even with Hallowe'en! But how do you save time and money in doing this? Do people still even have a tray of sweets for guests that pop by? I think so.

Do you find when you are baking your Christmas goodies, you wish that you could just bake a whole bunch of one thing and not have to worry about anything else? I do. I get in a routine and it's less overwhelming to make a lot of one thing, but who wants to eat just one type of sweet?

Well, have a cookie exchange. I am having one at my house here in a couple of weeks. All you have to do is find some other people (not necessarily women); friends, family, neighbours, church people, work associates, and invite them over. Once you know how many people are coming, say 10, everyone bakes 10 dozen of their cookies. They keep one dozen for themselves, and bring the other 9 for everyone else. You end up with 10 different types of sweets and their recipes, and you didn't have to do all of the work! Everyone gets something great for the holidays and you have a good time socializing as well! Try it out. One piece of advice: find out what everyone is making so that there aren't any duplicates.

Enjoy your day!

Long time ago I had this blog

So it's been awhile since I have updated on here. My apologies. It's been on my mind a lot lately and I have been thinking of the way I want this blog to go. I love sales and being frugal so I thought that might be what should be discussed on here. I hope there are people that still read this blog as well or people that will find it at least.

With that, I will update on sales weekly (unfortunately, I usually only go for what I use and know is a sale, so if you see something else, please let me know so I can post it) and I am going to do a daily penny pinching item to help us all out. Please feel free to submit ideas.

With that, as sales are ending tomorrow night, please make sure you stock up on President's Choice Orange Juice for 99 cents, regular $1.79. And if you want to splurge or love Activia yogurt, go on over to Shopper's Drug Mart and get it 2/$5 regular $3.79 each! I love this yogurt so much! It's like having dessert and it being okay to eat it.

Enjoy your day!

Stocking up on eggs and butter

Shoppers Drug Mart has on sale tomorrow eggs for $1.79 a dozen and butter for $2.49 a lbs. It is for tomorrow only. Freeze them and stock up, this is a great savings. There are other great deals this week in the flyers (especially Superstore!), but I don't get the food flyer for Shoppers for some reason. The rest of the flyer comes, just not this part. I have a great friend that calls me when these things go on sale, and since I don't think that I am the only one that doesn't get this insert, I thought it best to post it on here.

If you aren't sure how to freeze eggs, it's rather simple. All you need are resealable bags and and ice cube tray.

Crack eggs and put them in each compartment of the ice cube tray, freeze and then empty them into the resealable bags. To thaw, put them in the fridge and wait until completely thawed; then only use them in recipes that the eggs will be cooked in.

Happy stocking up!

*By the way, it says there is a limit, but it doesn't say that you can't come into the store several times, nor does it say per family. So get your family together to go in and get their limit also!

Enjoy your day!

Laundry, laundry and more laundry

Does it ever seem like it's all you do? We are a family of 6 and it's amazing how much laundry is generated through a week. We are starting to look at the merits of a front loading washing machine to lower the cost of electricity, be more efficient and, of course, to be more environmentally conscience.

To lower my costs of laundry (I do about 15 loads a week), we wash in cold water and hang my clothes on the clothesline as much as possible. I buy laundry detergent on sale and try not to wash clothes just because (you know, those lovely clothes that the children put in the wash because they looked at them). I guess I am also blessed enough to have a washing machine that folds clothes during the wash cycle and even pairs socks together! I know, it's the children being lazy, but I wish that the machines had that option; then again, they probably wouldn't be folded the way that I would want and I would have to redo them all.

Where is this leading to? Well, lately there has been a lot of talk from the people around me about making your own laundry detergent. It equates to about 3 cents a load with this recipe. Since we love to pinch pennies, I am giving it to you:

Homemade Laundry Soap

1/3 bar Fels Naptha or other type of soap (sunlight)
1/2 cup washing soda (arm and hammer makes this and it's in the laundry detergent aisle)
1/2 cup borax
6 cups water
4 cups hot water
1 gallon and 6 cups more water

You will also need a small bucket, about 2 gallons in size

Grate the soap and put it in a sauce pan. Add 6 cups water and heat it until the soap melts. Add the washing soda and the borax and stir until dissolved. Remove from heat and pour 4 cups hot water into the bucket. Now add mixture and stir. Add 1 gallon plus 6 cups of water and stir. Let the soap sit for 24 hours and it will gel. Use 1/2 cup per load.

** Some people like a little extra cleaning boost to the recipe so they double the amount of borax and washing soda, this only very mildly effects the cost and may help if you feel you need it.

Here is my disclaimer- I have NEVER tried it. I have two buckets of it in the laundry room that have been given to me, but I have enough other detergent to go through before I get to that rotation. I stock up when it's on sale. I have no idea how well it works on Island dirt, but heard from a friend that she got grass stains out with it. I will update on this when I get to that part of my laundry storage.

Should you not want to or have the desire to make your own soap, and you aren't a diehard one type of soap user, there are some brands that are on sale this week. Sobeys has Xtra 2x Concentrated Liquid Laundry Detergent on for buy one get one free; 2/$9.99. It equates out to about 5 cents a load and you don't have to make it! Coop has ABC 2x liquid on for $3.00 (if you have a membership) for 42 loads. It equates out to 7 cents a load.

What do you use? Any laundry tips to share with the rest of us to lower our prices? I look forward to hearing from you. Happy laundering.

Enjoy your day!

PS for an update on this post, please see this post for how this detergent works.
