Recently, I have had the opportunity to be a columnist on CBC radio. It airs once a month on Mainstreet PEI with a different topic each month. For March, the topic was "What is Frugality?" If you missed it, or would like to hear it again, please click here.
If you have any comments, suggestions or questions you would like to share or have discussed on the column please feel free to comment on this post, or email me at fightingtobefrugal at yahoo dot ca, or you can hop on over to the Facebook page and be part of the discussion there.
Enjoy!

Explanations and Diapers
My apologies, again as I have been away for a bit.
You see, I was pregnant with our fifth child. The end of the pregnancy just zapped the energy out of me and then, our lovely son arrived and life has taken some adjusting. Needless to say, we have become even more frugal in the past several weeks.
I am curious, my frugal friends, do you think having a child costs lots of money?
We haven't found it too much of an adjustment. We had a crib and some baby toys from our previous children, but, as we thought we were done having children, had given everything else away. Once we decided to have one more, it's amazing how much generosity has come back our way. Babies grow out of their clothes EXTREMELY quickly, and between family and friends, the hand-me-downs got handed around. Including a lovely overall set that I had for our eldest that I was sure was destroyed or lost in the rounds along the way. I have only purchased one set of sleepers and one outfit for our baby as I was starting to panic thinking that we didn't have anything for our son to wear.
Our biggest purchase thus far has been diapers. This is one expense that I indulge in - disposable diapers. Now I can hear your gasp through the internet. I must explain. Our oldest child had severe reactions to all cloth diapers, detergents and creams. The doctor instructed us to get him in disposable diapers. When our second child was born, we were told not to even try her on cloth.
Scary for this frugal environmentally friendly mother. I figured for sure I would have my children in cloth diapers.
Thankfully, I guess, my children can't even handle wearing huggies or pampers. They can only wear the cheap diapers. I find this too funny. Even their bums are somewhat frugal.
We have found that Walmart brand diapers work the best for us (and they are the cheapest). The second best are Teddy's Choice from Superstore.
What do you find is your biggest expense, or feared expense is about having a baby? What do you do for diapers? What are your frugal ideas on babies?
Enjoy your day!

Menu Planning Apology
Hello readers,
I was just informed by one of our frugal friends that the links on the menu planning site took you to a different place instead of to the link about menu planning. My apologies. Even today, the links were working on my computer, but not our friends's and not my husband's work computer.
I have since changed the links and added some new ones. Please check them out and if they aren't working, please let me know.
Again, oops!

A comeback on blogging
My apologies for falling out of the loop. You know how they say breaking a good habit is easier than starting one? Well, I can attest to that. After being away for a week on a trip, it was hard to get back in to the grind.
This past week, my husband, father in law and myself learned the art of laying hardwood floor. We bought this beautiful Oak hardwood that worked out to be $2.79 a square foot with taxes in and after a rebate and sale awhile ago. This past week, we got around to laying it. It was rather intimidating to start it and to make sure it was squared. However, we learned a new skill, how to appreciate others work a tad more and saved DOLLARS! All of these things are a great thing!
This is a great way that you can save money around the home, now with libraries in every home (internet) we can enlist videos and other's knowledge on how to do many things. What do you do around your home to save money? Please send it in and we can have a reader's post on it.
The other lovely dollar saving thing that I was able to have yesterday, was four wonderful loads drying outside on my clothesline. That's $3 in my pocket and not Maritime Electric's! Gotta love this spring weather!
With spring here, I have a question for you: are you planning a vegetable garden this year? We have had one as long as I can remember. It's always been a part of my life, and living on PEI, we are blessed with VERY fertile soil. Today, my children and I are planting some more transplant seeds to grow in our beautiful sunny room.
What kind of gardening do you do? We are sort of a square foot gardeners. I bottle what we don't eat or give away. In fact, we are currently on our last bottle of salsa and just ran out of tomatoes last month. I am praying that we have a bounteous harvest again this year.
Join with me in gardening, whether you have acres, a small plot or a balcony. Everyone can do it. There is nothing like seeing your food grow and then eating it and it's a great way to keep it VERY local and save some dollars.
Tell me, what are you going to grow in your garden? Send us your garden list and we'll post it! Keep us updated through out the summer and share some tips on canning, preserving, and some photos on how your garden grows. Email me at smile_zil at yahoo dot ca

Name Change
You may have noticed that the web address is still the same, but the name has changed. I thought that since a lot of my readers are not from my maritime region anymore, that I should really title this blog what it is: fighting to be frugal.
How often is it that we get behind for whatever reason; car repairs, home improvements, sicknesses, unemployment. The list can go on and on. It happens to the best and the worst of us. Sometimes it seems like you will never catch up let alone get ahead. I really feel that this blog needs to change it's focus for your benefit as well as mine.
In my fight to be more frugal, I want to be able to share my experiences, my successes and my lessons learned with you. I want you to share your experiences, successes, lessons learned with the rest of us. Only by us both sharing can we benefit.
I don't have all of the answers, in fact I fell like a fall rather short in the answer department, but what I do know I will share with you. I will research for you if you like and together we can become more frugal.
Interested?
I have had a reader that asked me to share my frugal things each day that happen in my home. I can't promise you that, but as I pinch my pennies even harder, I promise to share my experiences.
Come along for the ride and know that you aren't alone in pinching your pennies.
Enjoy your day!

Hello Readers,
I am wondering if you can help me out. The Youth Sunday School (called The Primary) at my church are compiling hygiene kits for Haiti. They consist of combs, toothpaste, toothbrushes, soap and hand towels. The great thing is that these can all be purchased at the dollar store. We have some elementary schools and another denomination collecting supplies for our kits.
Our problem, though, is that we missed the tractor trailer that was coming from Master Packaging and Cornerstone Baptist Church that was at Walmart. Do you, my readers, know of anyone that is shipping supplies down to Haiti that we can send our hygiene kits down with? Or do you know of anyone or any business that would like to offer shipping for us? Please contact me either through the comment form or email me at smile_zil at yahoo dot ca.
Thanks so much, and enjoy your day!
